Graphic design of the logo for the Bavarian-Japanese pianist Masako Ohta

We were particularly pleased to have been commissioned in 2020 to develop a logo for one of the world’s best pianists. Because Marlene Kern Design Branding Agency Munich was not only supposed to develop Masako Ohta’s new trademark for this project, but also to design the poster for an upcoming concert.

Logo Design as a living element of the Corporate Identity

As graphic designers, we always rethink every logo design. With this order, too, we first dealt with the advertising media and the online channels where this logo should be used.

We were amazed by the diversity of this multi-award-winning artist. In addition to her numerous performances as a solo pianist with an enormous range of programs, Masako Ohta also works in various constellations with internationally successful musicians.

We saw this as a special requirement for the variability of the artist’s brand, which we solved with the idea of ​​a lively color scheme. In our opinion, however, this required the logo to be highly concise in order to remain recognizable.

We therefore created the typography in a modern font, suitable for the avant-garde repertoire of the exceptional artist. By arranging the name on two lines, we ensured readability even with the smallest effort. The colors blue and red mentally connect the logo with the states of Bavaria and Japan. The outline writing reveals the black piano keys in the background. As a universal symbol for playing the piano, it intuitively conveys what this graphic is all about. In addition, we set the name of Masako Ohta in Japanese script, thereby complementing the unspecific visual form into a compact rectangle.
