About This Project

Branding design for the music project Lunar_samples, improvisations on original sound recordings of the Apollo missions 1969-1972. The Japanese-Munich concert pianist Masako Ohta and the violinist and composer Markus Muench – both virtuoso and renowned artists – will be heard together on stage at this long-term concert series. For the upcoming start of the tour, Marlene Kern Design was commissioned for the branding design – it had to be appropriate, concise and recognizable to the theme as well as convey the experimental character of the improvisation concerts.

The Apollo missions 1969-1972 are “a big step for humanity”, which still seem like the future today. In designing the project title as a wordmark, we had in mind to illustrate this futuristic connotation through modern, simple typography. At first glance, it is not only the lettering in bright yellow that connects with the theme of the moon landings, but also the background motif, a lunar landscape with its typical craters and structures, makes the reference to “Lunar_samples”. In a paper with a shiny metallic surface, we found the ideal quality to make associations around the materiality of space travel, space shuttles, space travel, etc., haptically perceptible.
